Go The All Blacks!

To show our support for The All Blacks this weekend everyone at Tawa School dressed in black.  We made a giant fern out on the bottom court.  We are going to send the photo to the All Blacks to show them that we are all cheering them on.

The game will be at 4:50am this Sunday on Prime T.V. if you would like to get up early to watch it live.

Reading Time

At reading time we get to play on the iPads and read books play with the beads, bugs, playdoe and sometimes write stories. We make things with the connectors today I made a rainbow, it was fun but it was hard. We play with the bugs.

Maths time fun

On Monday, during our maths time, a group of students were building a long line with the connector sticks. They were given a metre ruler to help them measure what they were doing and then they built something so long we couldn't fit it into the classroom easily! We took it onto the deck, where they decided they wanted to make it longer than a T-Rex. So then the students went to look up how long a T-rex was, and found out it was 13 metres long. Using the metre ruler, we had an impromptu measurement lesson. Some of the rest of the class came to look at what was happening and gave a hand with the measuring.

The first time we measured, the students realised it was 12 metres long, a metre short of being as long as a T-rex. So they took some sections apart, added them on the end and tried again. This time it was 14.5 metres long, so one and a half metres longer than the dinosaur! They were very impressed. We talked about how much longer it would need to be to be bigger than a spinosaurus too. Even the teachers learnt a lot!

The 13 Storey Treehouse.

Room 12 have been reading The 13 Storey Treehouse as our class book this term.  It is part one of a very funny series by Andy Griffiths.  We thought it would be fun to have a go at creating our own treehouses.  Here are some videos of students describing how they made their treehouses.

Tomorrow we will be writing about our treehouses.

On Friday 23rd October there will be a show at school called Stig - Live @ the Library.  He will be talking a lot about Andy Griffiths books.  It sounds like it will be a very funny and entertaining show!  You can follow this link if you would like to find out more.

After reading an article called Fronting the Show, some of our students made documentaries about Tawa School. They learnt about filming out of order, how to narrate a presentation, filming a video and putting it all together. Check out Nevaeh (presenter) and Chris (cameraman) today, and watch out for Tilly and Gachen tomorrow!

Building a Waka.

Some of our students have been reading a story called 10 Waka For Christmas.  There were instructions explaining how to make a waka so they decided to give it a go.

It was fun testing the wakas to see if they floated.  Everyone then discussed why some wakas floated and some didn't.

This is a story about making a waka.

Today we made waka and it is another name for boats.  Margaret helped us.  We needed wire and sticks then paper for the flag.  It was hard but then Margaret helped me.  It was lovely for her to help me.  Then we had to stop because it was almost lunchtime and then we tested it very quickly and then we played and then the bell rang.  We went inside the classroom then I started reading and then the teacher drummed the drum.  The whole class went down on the mat then Brenda said, "The Waka Team come here."  Then Brenda took a video and it was about the waka.  We went outside to do the video and we went in the forest.  We started videoing then it was home time.  We tidied up the classroom then we went on the mat in a circle.  The bell rang then we went home.  Then it was night time.  I went to sleep.

Discovering Shapes!

Today in Room 12 we began our unit about shapes during Discovery Time.  Today was about having fun and sharing some of the knowledge that we already have with our classmates.  We did a variety of different activities.  We were able to choose which activities we wanted to try.

We read a big book together called The Shape Race in Outer Space.  It was about a race in space. The space people were travelling past all sorts of different shapes.  This got us thinking about all of the different types of shapes that there are around us.

Here are some of the activities that we were doing today.

3D Playdough Shapes.  It was fun making different 3D shapes using playdough.  We even made a piece of Cadbury chocolate.  Can you name what the 3D shapes are?

Shape Monsters.  This was a fun art activity and game rolled into one.  You had to throw the shape dice and then the number dice to create a monster.  We ended up with some very zany looking monsters!

Colour by Shapes. Some people wanted some quiet time to sit and colour in a fun picture. We had to colour the circles blue, and Cooper pointed out that the sun was going to be blue!

Soft Block Tower Building.  It was interesting how some shapes fit together better than others.  There was a lot of thinking and discussion going on with this activity.

 

Connector Stick 3D Shapes.  We had 3D models to look at and we had to figure out how we could recreate those shapes using our Connector Sticks. Some of us even made shape machines!

Beanbag Shape Throw.  In this game we had to identify the 3D shape and then try to land the beanbag on that shape. It was a good chance to practice our shapes and work as a team.

Shapes Straw Blow.  This was a fun activity and we really had to concentrate.  It's very tricky trying to keep the pompom on the shape without using your hands! We talked about how shapes had different numbers of sides and that made it easier or harder to go around.

iPad Shapes Hunt. Please click on the circles and triangles in these images.  Thinglink is an App that Room 12 is learning how to use at the moment.  It is a great way to practice using different types of media, including videos and noted pictures.

What we learnt:

At the end of our Discovery Time lesson we had some time to share our ideas with each other.  This is some of the things that students learnt and wanted to share with the class.

"You can draw triangles in different ways."

"There is 2D and 3D."

"The 2D is flat and the 3D pops out."

I didn't know it was 3D but I saw it in Minecraft."

"2D stands for 2 dimensional and 3D stands for 3 dimensional."

"I learnt that you can make stuff out of shapes like ice creams!"

"I know a different shape.  It is called a dodecahedron."

"I learnt how to draw a hexagon.  It has 6 sides."

"I didn't know that a cuboid is a 3D shape."

"A cube has 6 faces."

The students recorded each other discussing their learning.

 

Over the next couple of weeks we will be exploring shapes further.  It would be great if you could please talk to your child about the different shapes that are all around us.  Especially identifying 2D and 3D shapes, how they are made and their names.
