Shopping at school

Today our classroom turned into a supermarket temporarily!

We have been looking at financial literacy, money, saving, and needs and wants this term. Today we brainstormed all the things that we can buy at the supermarket.

Then the students paired up, and looked around the supermarket to see what they could buy with their money. They had to write down on their lists what they would buy, and keep a running total to make sure they were coming in under budget. It was a great maths activity and a challenge to figure out what were the best things to buy with our money.

At the end of the session we circled the things on our list that were healthy, talked about why we need healthy foods, and talked about the things that we found difficult in this task.

Planet Posters.

Room 12 have had a lot of fun learning about the planets in our solar system.  We have been doing research, learning songs and exploring with art.  Today we were busy making posters about the different planets.  We worked in groups of 4-5 and we all had different tasks.  After we had finished finding all of the information and presenting it on our posters, we then shared all of our information with the class.

Here is a song that we have been listening to about the different planets in the Solar System.

Please come and check out our posters. You'll be sure to learn all sorts of new information.  Room 12 are becoming experts on all things about space.

Planets and Shaving Cream

What do planets and shaving cream have in common? Art, apparently! Today we made planets for our wall, using shaving cream and dye powder. We've been looking at space, and the solar system and we wanted a planet display for our wall. Sensory and messy play is an important part of learning so we made the most of it this afternoon!

First we looked at the colours of the planets, got into groups, and then cut out our planets. We put shaving cream on the table, and mixed it around with our hands. Then we added dye powder in the colour of each planet, and mixed that in. We had to wash our hands next, before we put our planets face-down on the shaving cream and patted it, to make sure that there was colour on all the parts of the paper.

Dioramas

This afternoon we had a fun technology/crafty session where we used a variety of materials to create a diorama or model. We had three choices based on our current events - a flood, a classroom, or space. The students chose to work individually, in pairs, or in threes. Look at what we've done!

We gathered supplies.

We measured and cut.

We used teamwork and compromising skills.

We had unique ideas.

We planned and shared ideas.

We are gymnasts!

We have had an AMAZING time at Big Air Gym this term. It has been stunning to see how much progress we have made in our confidence, strength, coordination, balance, and general motor skills. The instructors at Big Air Gym have been fantastic, and they helped us to learn so much. Look at us go!

Sports day

Yesterday we walked to St Francis Xavier School for a sports session with juniors from other schools in Tawa. We had so much fun doing a bunch of activities like sack races, balancing balls on tennis rackets, and throwing balls into a bucket.
