Suzy from St Johns Ambulance says "Call 111 in an emergency."

Yesterday we had a visit from Suzy at the St Johns Ambulance service.  She taught us all about the very important things that the ambulance service does in our community and how they help us.  She told us about the different kinds of emergency services and how each one can help us.

Suzy talked about what kind of emergency services we might need and when we needed to call 111 and when we didn't.

Suzy asked some of us to volunteer trying on the uniform.  Suzy explained how the uniform helps to keep people protected and safe.

Suzy showed us all some of the equipment that we might see in an ambulance.  It was very interesting looking and holding the breathing mask, bandages, gloves and stethoscope.

Some of us had a go at pretending to phone 111.  We learnt some of the things the emergency operator will ask us if we ever need to ring in an emergency.  Some of the things that we need to know are...

What is your address?
What is your phone number?
Tell me what happened?
It would be wonderful if students could please practise this at home as it is so important that children are able to say their address, phone number and full name.

At the end of the session, Suzy let all of those people who wanted to, to try on the uniform.  Maybe we have some future Ambulance Officers in the making?

Dioramas

This afternoon we had a fun technology/crafty session where we used a variety of materials to create a diorama or model. We had three choices based on our current events - a flood, a classroom, or space. The students chose to work individually, in pairs, or in threes. Look at what we've done!

We gathered supplies.

We measured and cut.

We used teamwork and compromising skills.

We had unique ideas.

We planned and shared ideas.

Cross Country

Room 12 have been training hard for weeks to prepare for the Tawa School Cross Country that was held on Tuseday.  We were so proud of everyone that gave it a go and many students did their personal best.  What a great effort Room 12!

Movemprove 2015

Room 12 have been going to Movemprove lessons every Wednesday in our school hall during Term 1.  Students love going along to build up their confidence and work on their movement skills.  The added bonus is that it is a lot of fun too!

Insect week part two

We have done SO much insect work this week. We should all be able to say some of the things that make an animal an insect. We learnt how many body parts an insect has (3), how many legs an insect has (6), what an insect has on top of their head (antennas/feelers), and something that a lot of insects have (wings).

Some of us have been enjoying school work so much this year that we start doing our handwriting and writing before school even starts for the day!

Insect week!

This week we have been learning about insects. We have had a few people show us insects they've seen, or videos about insects so we wanted to learn about what an insect is. We watched this video and learnt that insects have three body parts, six legs, and often have wings.

Tomorrow Room 12 will be watching this video about wasps.  Emma and her mum took this video when they were doing a tramp recently.  It would be wonderful if you could look at the video tonight and discuss it with your child.
