Rockets, Rockets, Rockets!

We had a very busy day in Room 12 today and it was all about rockets!

Some students created some beautiful rocket art.  Students used pencil to draw their rocket and then went over the pencil with sharpie.  Next they painted their rockets using lovely, vibrant colours.  They look fantastic and are currently on display on our solar system wall.

We had our wonderful student teachers, Meki and Christina, teach others how to make straw rockets.  They did such a great job at showing everyone what to do.

Many students enjoyed creating rockets out of boxes, containers and all sorts of bits and bobs.

We did a little bit of science today as well and raced balloon rockets.  Can you work out why some went faster than others?

It got a little bit loud when everyone joined in for the countdown with our balloon rocket races.  It was very exciting!

Dioramas

This afternoon we had a fun technology/crafty session where we used a variety of materials to create a diorama or model. We had three choices based on our current events - a flood, a classroom, or space. The students chose to work individually, in pairs, or in threes. Look at what we've done!

We gathered supplies.

We measured and cut.

We used teamwork and compromising skills.

We had unique ideas.

We planned and shared ideas.

Reading Programme

Our reading programme is always very busy, and full of changes. The students are making great progress with their reading, and we do a whole lot of literacy activities while groups read with the teachers.

We learn about word families and make real (and sometimes silly) words by putting the start and end of words together.

Life in the Trenches

We have been learning a lot about what life was like in World War One, as well as how we commemorate and remember those who have served our country.

We have read the big book "Dawn Parade" by Philippa Werry, which is the story of a young boy going to his first dawn service. You can listen to it here:

Colour Week!

This week we are looking at colours in the world around us.

We read "Harold and the Purple Crayon" and wrote stories about what we would do if we had a magic crayon that could draw anything, like Harold's.

Dragon stories

On Wednesday our writing lesson was writing letters about what we were looking forward to or hoping to do this year in Room 12. The students didn't have an awful lot to say about that, so a lot of our writing didn't get past "Dear Becca and Brenda"...! On Thursday, we decided to shake it up a bit and Brenda got everyone to think about this picture:
