Pyjama Day

It was fun coming to school in our pyjamas today.  Look at all of the different colours and patterns.

To start off our Pyjama Day we did an activity called Find Someone Who Has...
It was was fun trying to find people who were wearing a onesie, stripes or spots, a dressing gown or buttons.  There were so many different types of pyjamas!

After morning-tea we had a yummy hot chocolate with marshmallows while we shared our stories with buddies.  Next we did a sorting activity.  We had to put our soft toys in order from biggest to smallest.
We could think of many other ways that we could sort the soft toys too.
Lightest to darkest, smoothest to roughest, widest to thinnest, most chewed to least chewed and we could also put them into different colour groups.  There were so many different ways that we could group our toys.

Lastly, we wrote some stories describing our pyjamas.  Here are a few examples.

My pyjamas are purple and stripy and soft.  When it is Pyjama Day I wear the pink, stripy, soft pyjamas.  The rest of it you already know.  I love my pyjamas.
Amber

My pyjamas have beautiful love hearts on them.  They are snuggly and warm.  I love my pyjamas.  I love pyjamas. I love sleeping in them.
Emma

Today it was Pyjama Day.  I wore my onesie.  My onesie is very, very warm.  My onesie is black and tan.  My onesie is a one part.  I love my onesie.  My onesie has buttons in the very middle of my onesie.  I forgot my slippers because I was too tired.
Noah

My pyjamas are black and white, also, red and pink and grey.  My onesies are so fluffy and hairy.  My pyjamas had so much beautiful snowflakes.  They are the best Hello Kitty pyjamas.  They had love hearts and x's.  They feel so good but they make me hot.
Ruby-Rose

My onesie is part of the Minions.  My onesie is a little bit big.  It keeps my body warm.  It makes me yawn and sleepy.  My sleeves are quite a bit long on my arms.  It is very long on my legs.  The colour of my onesie is yellow and blue.  The blue is the suit.  The yellow is the body like the beautiful shining sun.  The blue is like the ice cold water.
Trae

My pyjamas have stripes on them and they are rainbow stripes.  The top of the pyjamas has an owl on it.  The owl has a love heart on its tummy.  My pyjamas are very soft and smooth.  They are peachy-pink with sparkles.
Tilly

I love my pyjamas because they're nice and snuggly.  They have patterns, Christmas patterns.  I love them.  Their colour is yellow.  They have red stripes.  They have long sleeves.  They have purple carrots.  They have salami, rainbow salami.  It has one hole.  They have spots.
Lilith

It was lovely spending the day reading a lot of stories too after such a busy day yesterday.

Shopping at school

Today our classroom turned into a supermarket temporarily!

We have been looking at financial literacy, money, saving, and needs and wants this term. Today we brainstormed all the things that we can buy at the supermarket.

Then the students paired up, and looked around the supermarket to see what they could buy with their money. They had to write down on their lists what they would buy, and keep a running total to make sure they were coming in under budget. It was a great maths activity and a challenge to figure out what were the best things to buy with our money.

At the end of the session we circled the things on our list that were healthy, talked about why we need healthy foods, and talked about the things that we found difficult in this task.

Planets and Shaving Cream

What do planets and shaving cream have in common? Art, apparently! Today we made planets for our wall, using shaving cream and dye powder. We've been looking at space, and the solar system and we wanted a planet display for our wall. Sensory and messy play is an important part of learning so we made the most of it this afternoon!

First we looked at the colours of the planets, got into groups, and then cut out our planets. We put shaving cream on the table, and mixed it around with our hands. Then we added dye powder in the colour of each planet, and mixed that in. We had to wash our hands next, before we put our planets face-down on the shaving cream and patted it, to make sure that there was colour on all the parts of the paper.

Cross Country

Room 12 have been training hard for weeks to prepare for the Tawa School Cross Country that was held on Tuseday.  We were so proud of everyone that gave it a go and many students did their personal best.  What a great effort Room 12!

Life in the Trenches

We have been learning a lot about what life was like in World War One, as well as how we commemorate and remember those who have served our country.

We have read the big book "Dawn Parade" by Philippa Werry, which is the story of a young boy going to his first dawn service. You can listen to it here:

We are gymnasts!

We have had an AMAZING time at Big Air Gym this term. It has been stunning to see how much progress we have made in our confidence, strength, coordination, balance, and general motor skills. The instructors at Big Air Gym have been fantastic, and they helped us to learn so much. Look at us go!

Graphs and Tally Charts Part 2

We have been working very hard in Room 12 over the last two weeks. We have been learning how to collect information and transfer information into graphs. This is so that we can make sense of the information around us. Today we decided to have a go at tallying M & M's and then we put the information that we had gathered into a bar graph.

Flying High

We are flying high in Room 12, so today we had a hot air balloon focus (which will continue throughout the week). We read "Barney Malloon's Balloon" all together, drew hot air balloons and wrote stories about where we would go if we were in a hot air balloon. We also sang this fun song together!
