Book Character Dress Up Day

Well done Room 12!  It was great to see so many students dressing up as their favourite book character.  There were many creative and imaginative ideas.

Can you guess which character some students were dressed as?

A special mention to Jackson and Joseph who were judged as runners-up for the school-wide best costume competition.

On our way to H2O Pools.

Getting ready to go back to school.

We were all very tired and many of us took the opportunity to have a wee nap on the way back.

A big thank you to our parent helpers today.  It was lovely to see so many families joining us on our fun day out.

Delicious Peas!

Today in Room 12 Aedan's mum Emma brought a yummy treat.  A big bag of freshly picked peas from her garden that were still in their pods.  Many of us knew that peas came from a plant but we had only ever tasted peas that had been bought from the supermarket in a bag.  It was exciting to open up the pods to find some peas inside!  Some students said that they tasted a lot sweeter than peas that they had eaten before.  We also read a story about two boys who ate peas from their garden called Look in the Garden.  It was such a lovely, sunny day to sit under a tree eating fresh peas and reading a story.  Thank you Emma and Aedan.

Rocky Shore Writing.

We had some amazing writing today, all about our trip to the rocky shore yesterday. Take a look at some of our stories!

Yesterday, the Rainbow Team went to the Island Bay Marine Centre. When it was my turn to touch stuff at the touching pool, I touched a sea urchin. It didn’t spike me. I saw five of them. I was surprised that it didn’t hurt me. I saw a sea urchin fighting a sea star. Some of the sea stars had four legs because of the sea urchins. In the aquarium I saw four tortoises. One was a baby and the other ones were adults. When it was room 15, 13 and 12’s turn, we got to go to the rocky shore. I saw a sea anemone. It felt like a wobbly jelly. By Connor

On Wednesday our class went on a school trip to Island Bay Aquarium. It was very fun. First, we had to get on a bus to drive there. We had to drive all the way through Wellington to Island Bay. When we got there we went into a building to talk about what the trip is about. After that, we went to the aquarium. First, I had a look at the sea turtles. They were struggling to clamber over the rocks and even each other. Next, I saw an octopus. It was the colour peach. It had a lost tentacle. It was sticking to the glass, trying to get out of its tank. Next, I went over to a little pool where you could touch some sea animals. I touched a sea snail, a starfish that was as hard as a rock, and a purple sea anemone.
Next, it was time to go outside to explore the rocky shore. My group found some yellow blobby stuff, some seaweed, and some black goo. Then it was time to go back to school. By Aedan

Outside in the rocky shore, a man found a medium-sized crab. The crabs arms had pointy sharp claws like shark teeth. When I had the crab, I needed to put my hand flat so the crab didn’t pinch me. The crab was ticklish when it came to my hand. A lady said, “Do you want to see a baby turtle?” We said, “Yes, please”, so she went to get the baby turtle from its aquarium and she came back. The baby was so cute. The lady put the baby turtle down. The baby turtle walked slowly like a slow sea snail. We fed the baby turtle. It was so hungry. It was so cute when the baby was eating. It was fun. In the marine centre, I went to the touch pool. I held a starfish. The starfish was hard like a solid rock. For lunch, we went to a park to play. It was so fun!  By Sherlyn

Yesterday I went to the rocky shore! I was excited that I couldn’t sleep last night. We were going after the bell rung. I was excited so I packed my stuff that I needed for the trip. I packed some spare clothes and a drink bottle, a jacket, sunscreen, and last of all a big, packed lunch.
When it was time to go to the trip, we put on our shoes and lined up outside. We went up to the top court, and the whole Rainbow Team were at the top court. Then we went off to the bus. I was excited to go on a bus because I like to go on a bus. I was sitting with Faraha and Amra and we were playing fun hand games. Amra was sitting alone and in front of me and Faraha. It was a long drive to the rocky shore. I was a little bit tired but I didn’t fall asleep.
When the bus got to the rocky shore, we went inside a house and we ate some morning tea. When I was done eating, a lady and a man came in and they were talking about the rocky shore. Then there was a brown and old rusty house, and we could touch some animals from the rocky shore.
When we were there, I was scared because the lady was scaring us with the big, black starfish and a fat sea cucumber. I got to touch a starfish and a sea anemone. It felt like I was touching wobbly jelly. The suckers were very sticky and it was sticking onto my hands. I found out that sea cucumbers breathe from their bum. I got to feel a starfish. I thought it would feel slimy but it wasn’t. It was hard as a rock. I saw some awesome starfish and there were lots of cool, different patterns.
Then the other class came and we went outside and the man was talking about seaweed. There were lots of different kinds of seaweed. Anya found a crab, and people thought it was a poisonous crab but it wasn’t a poisonous crab. I found a pretty shell. It was twisty like a hermit crab shell.
The other group came out of the brown house. Then we went to the park and we didn’t take the bus, we walked to the park. I was playing with my friend Areeb. He was going on the slide again and again. I went like a rocket ship.
Then after an hour or a minute, we had to go back to school. When we got back to school, we watched a movie called “The Magic School Bus Takes a Dive”. I was enjoying the movie, then the bell rang and we had to go home.
I had a lovely time going on the big, awesome, cool trip. By Aabish

At the rocky shore I touched a crab. When I got to hold it, it tickled and it wriggled everywhere. I giggled. It looked purplish black. It jiggled and wiggled. It was so ticklish. I could not stop giggling. Inside the aquarium, I saw a baby seahorse and a pregnant one. I saw it have a baby. It was so adorable. When it came out, it fell to the ground to hide. Its head poked first, then the rest of it. It was adorable. By Emma

When I touched the starfish, it felt hard. When I looked at it, it had brown bumps. It smelled like a salty fish. When I touched it, it tickles my hand. It felt like I was going to drop it. I picked it up with my other hand. I saw a turtle too. The lady took a turtle out of the tank and I thought it was going to bite e on the finger. I patted it on the hand and the hand felt soft. The lady said, “don’t touch the hand” and we didn’t. I patted it on the shell. The shell was dark green and light green on the top. By Christina

When I touched the sea cucumber, it was super sticky. Plus, it felt like jelly and goo! Eww! I thought starfish/seastars were very soft and silky. I didn’t know it was hard. That was my favourite part. The octopus was so scary with its eyes. Ahh! With big suckers! By Ashley

In the aquarium, I held a starfish. It was hard. The starfish was green. It was light green and dark green. The starfish had 5 points. I touched a sea cucumber in the aquarium. It was soft and squishy. I was freaked out by the sea cucumber. By Lilith

On Wednesday, we went to the rocky shore aquarium. There was tuna. They are fish that have to be in cold water. If you don’t wet your hand, you will burn them. Starfish are so cool creatures because they aren’t really slimy. Starfish are kind of brown. They are as hard as a rock. They are as small as a mouse. Crayfish are like insects, and they are fast.
Sometimes you can find crabs outside. By Joseph

At the Aquarium I saw an octopus.  It was medium.  It looked pale and crispy.  It had white suction cups.  It stuck onto the glass.  It looks awesome.  It pushed to the other piece of glass.
In the touching pool we had to cool our hands.  Then we could touch the animals.  I touched the sea urchin.  It felt like nothing.  I also touched a starfish.  It curled.
In the aquarium I saw a turtle.  We got to touch the flippers under the shell and I saw a shark.  It was a baby shark.  It was in a rock cave.  Henry showed it to me.
Then we went outside on the rocks.  The man showed us the nets so we could go fishing.  I saw the fastest growing seaweed.  It looks like olives.  I saw a seaweed river.  I put my fishing net in and got some seaweed and I put it in the bucket.  By Alex

In the Aquarium I saw an octopus.  It was an orangey colour.  I got fascinated.  I saw  tentacle missing.  Under its arm it has suckers to help it eat.  In the Touch Pool I picked up a Hermit crab.  It went in, out, in, out.  I saw it was muddy green.  I saw it had pinchers.  I touched the Sea Anemone on the tentacles.
A Sea Cucumber breathes through its bum.  Also to protect itself it pushes its gut out and grows a new one.  By Jackson

Yesterday when I got to school I said to my Mum “Oh yes, my school trip!”  I already had the stuff and we went on the bus.  We had the right gear to go on the school trip.I saw a starfish.  I got to hold it.  It felt like sticky goo.  I like to hold starfish.  It looked adorable.  I felt nervous but then I felt happy.
Then I went to go and feed the turtles and I had to do it with a hook.  The turtle food looked like a worm but it was just meat.  I had to pull the hook.  The colour is greeny brown.  I got to feel the shell and the two feet.  I want a pet turtle for Christmas.  Please Santa bring me a pet turtle.  By Mishaylah

Starfish have lots of arms.  I like starfish.  Starfish can have 6 arms some starfish have lots.  I picked up the starfish.  It felt soft and the starfish had 5 arms and the starfish was    small and some starfish are big.  The starfish are colourful but some starfish have long arms.  Starfish live in the Rocky Shore and starfish are big and small and starfish can breathe underwater.  By Meki
Yesterday we went to the rocky shore.  I got to hold a seastar.  It is white and the front and white on the back.  It looks green in the photo, but it is actually white.  I also got to touch a red sea anemone, it was poisonous.  There were heaps of them underneath the rocks.  I found a brown crab in the water covered by some seaweed.  It nearly pinched me but I got my finger out just in time.  In the aquarium I saw an octopus.  The octopus was stuck on the glass with his suckers.  By Tilly

On Wednesday the Rainbow Team went on a bus to an aquarium called the Marine Education Centre.  We saw starfish in the touch pool, the aquarium and the rock pools.  They were slimy and had a bumpy texture.  It was stuck on the side of the touch pool.  Its little tentacle things were flailing around and they looked like arms.  When I was holding the starfish one of its legs were up, it felt hard.  We saw turtles and we got to feed them.  Judy (The person who worked at the aquarium) put one of them down on the ground so we could see her walk.  She was slow.  By Louise

I went to the rocky shore with half of my class.  We saw crabs.  I picked up one with my net.  It jiggled in my net.  We put it in the bucket.  It wriggled in the bucket.  Emma found a starfish.  It looked like it's harmless.  Emma picked it up and put it in the bucket.  We put it in the net.  She put it in the bucket.  We saw all the different creatures.  Afterwards we went home.  It was a good day.  I left the bucket at  the rocky shore.  It was a fantastic day.  I liked yesterday and I hope you did too.  By Amber

Rocky shore visit

We had a great time at the Island Bay Marine Centre and rocky shore today. We got to go into the aquarium room and look at lots of interesting animals. We also got to touch animals in the touch pool. That was very exciting! We used flat hands and careful fingers to hold the starfish, crabs, sea anemones and sea cucumbers. Some of us even got to pat and feed a turtle!

Then we went down to the rocky shore and explored, lifting up rocks and hunting for any creatures we could find.

We finished the day off with lunch and a play at the playground. It was so much fun! Thanks to all the parent helpers who came with us.
