Maths time fun
On Monday, during our maths time, a group of students were building a long line with the connector sticks. They were given a metre ruler to help them measure what they were doing and then they built something so long we couldn't fit it into the classroom easily! We took it onto the deck, where they decided they wanted to make it longer than a T-Rex. So then the students went to look up how long a T-rex was, and found out it was 13 metres long. Using the metre ruler, we had an impromptu measurement lesson. Some of the rest of the class came to look at what was happening and gave a hand with the measuring.
The boys who made it: Cordell, Trae, Jackson and Joseph.

The first time we measured, the students realised it was 12 metres long, a metre short of being as long as a T-rex. So they took some sections apart, added them on the end and tried again. This time it was 14.5 metres long, so one and a half metres longer than the dinosaur! They were very impressed. We talked about how much longer it would need to be to be bigger than a spinosaurus too. Even the teachers learnt a lot!

Here are some of their thoughts and a video explaining what they had done:

Planets and Shaving Cream
What do planets and shaving cream have in common? Art, apparently! Today we made planets for our wall, using shaving cream and dye powder. We've been looking at space, and the solar system and we wanted a planet display for our wall. Sensory and messy play is an important part of learning so we made the most of it this afternoon!
First we looked at the colours of the planets, got into groups, and then cut out our planets. We put shaving cream on the table, and mixed it around with our hands. Then we added dye powder in the colour of each planet, and mixed that in. We had to wash our hands next, before we put our planets face-down on the shaving cream and patted it, to make sure that there was colour on all the parts of the paper.

Dioramas
This afternoon we had a fun technology/crafty session where we used a variety of materials to create a diorama or model. We had three choices based on our current events - a flood, a classroom, or space. The students chose to work individually, in pairs, or in threes. Look at what we've done!
We gathered supplies.
We measured and cut.
We used teamwork and compromising skills.
We had unique ideas.
We planned and shared ideas.

Cross Country
Room 12 have been training hard for weeks to prepare for the Tawa School Cross Country that was held on Tuseday. We were so proud of everyone that gave it a go and many students did their personal best. What a great effort Room 12!

Movemprove 2015
Room 12 have been going to Movemprove lessons every Wednesday in our school hall during Term 1. Students love going along to build up their confidence and work on their movement skills. The added bonus is that it is a lot of fun too!

Insect week part two
We have done SO much insect work this week. We should all be able to say some of the things that make an animal an insect. We learnt how many body parts an insect has (3), how many legs an insect has (6), what an insect has on top of their head (antennas/feelers), and something that a lot of insects have (wings).
Some of us have been enjoying school work so much this year that we start doing our handwriting and writing before school even starts for the day!

Graphs and Tally Charts Part 2
We have been working very hard in Room 12 over the last two weeks. We have been learning how to collect information and transfer information into graphs. This is so that we can make sense of the information around us. Today we decided to have a go at tallying M & M's and then we put the information that we had gathered into a bar graph.
